Ligustrum ovalifolium (Green Privet)
Ligustrum ovalifolium, commonly known as Green Privet or Oval-Leaved Privet, is a reliable, fast-growing hedging plant. Its dense growth and glossy green foliage make it an excellent choice for privacy, shelter and neatly defined garden boundaries.
Green Privet is considered semi-evergreen. It usually retains most of its leaves through mild Irish winters but may shed some foliage during colder or more exposed conditions. Small white flowers can appear in summer, followed by dark berries if the hedge is not regularly trimmed. It is a great source of nectar for honeybees.
- Growth rate: Fast, approximately 30–45 cm per year
- Ideal hedge height: 1–3 metres
- Planting density: 2ft apart
- Position: Full sun or partial shade
- Soil: Suitable for most well-drained soils
- Maintenance: Trim once or twice a year
- Hardiness: Hardy and well suited to Irish conditions
Water regularly during the first growing season and keep the area around the plants free from weeds while they establish. Privet responds very well to pruning and can be maintained as a tidy formal hedge or allowed to develop a softer, more natural appearance.
Please note: Privet leaves and berries are harmful if eaten, so care should be taken around children and pets.
