Carpinus betulus hedge, also known as Hornbeam:

Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) Hedging

Carpinus betulus is a hardy, dependable native hedging plant with fresh green leaves that turn warm yellow and brown in autumn. It often holds some of its dried foliage through winter, providing continued screening and shelter.

Hornbeam creates a dense, attractive hedge and responds well to regular trimming. It is particularly useful for colder, exposed locations and heavier or damper soils, although it grows best in well-drained ground. Suitable for both formal gardens and natural boundaries, it also provides valuable habitat for birds and other wildlife.

  • Growth rate: Approximately 30–45 cm per year
  • Recommended planting: 2ft apart for rootball.
  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: Most soil types, including clay and seasonally damp ground
  • Maintenance: Trim once or twice a year, ideally in late summer
  • Suitable hedge height: Around 1.5–5 metres
  • Care
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. A soaker hose is ideal for delivering slow, even moisture directly to the roots. Add mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and reduce weeds. Prune in late spring or summer to maintain the desired height and shape.
