Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant' (White Cedar)
Thuja 'Brabant' is one of the fastest and most reliable evergreen hedging conifers for Irish gardens, putting on roughly 30-40cm of growth a year once established. Its dense, bright green foliage holds its colour right through winter, giving you year-round privacy, shelter from wind, and a soft natural screen that's far more attractive than fencing.
Happy in full sun or partial shade, it thrives in most well-drained Irish soils and tolerates our damp, mild climate beautifully. Plant 2 ft apart for a solid hedge, and trim once or twice in the growing season to keep it tight and formal. Hardy, low-maintenance, and quick to fill a gap.
- Growth rate: 30-40cm per year
- Recommended hedge height: 1.5m to 4m
- Planting density: plant 2 ft apart
- Position: full sun to partial shade
- Evergreen, fully hardy
- Care
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. A soaker hose is ideal for delivering slow, even moisture directly to the roots. Add mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and reduce weeds. Prune in late spring or summer to maintain the desired height and shape.
