Purple Beech Hedging

Purple Beech is a striking, versatile hedging plant with rich copper, burgundy and purple foliage. It creates an elegant, dense hedge that brings colour and structure to gardens throughout the year.

Although Purple Beech is deciduous, it often holds onto its dry brown leaves through winter, providing useful screening during the colder months. In spring, fresh purple leaves emerge, followed by deeper tones through summer and autumn.

  • Rich purple-bronze foliage
  • Dense, attractive growth
  • Provides excellent privacy and shelter
  • Suitable for formal and natural-style gardens
  • Hardy and well suited to Irish growing conditions

Planting and care

Plant Purple Beech between autumn and early spring, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged. It grows best in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.

Water regularly during the first growing season, especially in dry weather. Trim once or twice a year to maintain the desired height and shape. For a fuller hedge, prune lightly during the early years to encourage bushy growth from the base.

Purple Beech makes an excellent choice for boundaries, screening, driveways and ornamental garden hedges, combining practical privacy with beautiful seasonal colour.
